Seriously........?

Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas and all that goes with it, and I'm not all 'BAH HUMBUG' either but I just don't get the fascination for decorating my house like this. We have a road near us where the residents hire an external generator to power up their decs, transform the houses to some gaudy, obscene Santa's delight. It is mesmorising to behold, in a car crash sort of way, you don't want to look but it is just too ridiculous to turn away. Maybe age has altered my opinion of Christmas but I just love the tasteful decs that put a smile on your face and a warm glow inside, or is that the mulled wine? Happy decorating!

16 Ranted Back:
I was debating just this point with a friend the other day. Nothing like saying "When I was a boy..." to feel like an old fart, but... When I was a boy we put the Xmas tree up Christmas Eve, and kept it up until 12th night. The anticipation was awful, but it made Xmas Eve extra special, a real event. This Xmas starting in late November just leaves me cold. Lets put the car wreck Xmas lights away, and savour the days when they finally come.
I see we're on the same wavelength. As I've been driving around, I've thought about stopping to take photos of the gaudier stuff.
If my mom had her druthers, that would be her house. We have to hold her back. It's terrible.
I'm so with you here.
One real tree, some lights on the lavender bushes outside my front door that don't bloody flicker, and that's my lot.

Hear, hear ... keep it simple just as the celebration should be
umm mulled wine, forget the decs and let's just get down to the eating and drinking i say
No offense but these people need to get a life! That's a little much! LOL
I think its just the one time of year when people can be tacky with abandon. The inside of my mom's house tends to look as though someone blew up a Christmas bomb. She loves it. . .
I do the simple (fake) garland of greenery with red bows meownself.
My birthday is the 22nd, and when I was really little, I used to think people decorated for me. Because of that, my parents started the tradition of driving us around town to look at the lights. I've continued it with my kids - although they are getting far to "cool" to do it anymore.
The gaudy houses are fun, but only because they aren't MY neighbors.
Though I agree with Charlie Brown and everyone here that Christmas has just gotten too commercial.
(((Rach))) missed you lady! I had to stop Dave with the lights. ;)
Daniel Craig looks fab.
XXOO
I saw a house on a busy street corner that was glowing with all the lights. It was way over the limit and beyond gaudy!!!
i think that house even outdoes anything i've seen in my neck of the woods.
In our town, we have a house that looks like that year round.
Awesome.
As usual The Boy has beaten me to it!
When I was a boy, we put up the decorations (the same ones each year which I liked) and then we took everything down on the 12th night.
My wife wanted to decorate on December 1st but I just would get the decorations down from the loft. She would have Christams decs up for all of december and all of January. I fact we went to a coffe shop on Saturday and she complained the whole time that they weren't playings Christmas music.
We have compromised on the decorations and they are going up tomorrow night.
I'm not a huge fan of indecent light displays either. Unless i'm on LSD or some other hallucinegic.
:)
It's the key to our generation: Overdo everything without regard for decorum.
